Pasadena CA Dentist Cosmetic

Chipped or cracked teeth are nothing to mess around with. While the problem may seem small and harmless at first, it can quickly unravel and become a big and embarrassing.
Chipped teeth are one of the most common dental injuries. They can range in terms of size anddamage – but any type deserves attention. It’s important that I rule out any other cracks or internal dental problems as soon as possible.

Of course, if you ever experience more significant trauma – like a knocked-out tooth – seek dental attention immediately! A broken tooth may expose a nerve and cause a great dealof pain. And, believe it or not, a completely knocked-out tooth can actually be saved if you act quickly.

You may be wondering how I treat chipped, cracked, or knocked-out teeth. Here are some common traumas and how they are treated at my office:

Chipped teeth: Depending on the size of the chip, it can be smoothed or cosmetically corrected. In most cases, it will be up to you decide how you want your tooth repaired. Options Include veneers, crowns and fillings. If a filling or artificial tooth becomes chipped, it should be replaced.

Cracked teeth: Cracked and broken teeth should be repaired as soon as possible to prevent further damage. Root canal therapy or tooth extraction may be necessary. If a crack affects the enamel and dentin of the tooth, a crown is usually the best treatment. Keep in mind that cracks are not always visible, even on X-rays. Symptoms may involve pain while chewing and sensitivity.

Knocked-out teeth: The key to successfully re-attaching a tooth is to get it re-implanted in the socket as soon as possible. With each minute that passes, more of the cells on the root of the tooth die. If possible, gently rinse the knocked-out tooth with water, put the tooth between your inside cheek and gums and hurry into my office as quickly as possible. The tooth should be picked up by the crown only and must not be allowed to dry. The best chance for success is re-implantation within the first 30 minutes, with chances still good for up to two hours.

We may laugh when someone falls and loses a tooth in the movies, but in reality tooth trauma is no laughing matter. If it happens to you – get help immediately. We’re always available to take your call in an emergency. Always.
