3 Myths About Root Canals That Are Not Even Kinda True

  • Blog

Best Dentist Pasadena CAIt’s common for people to associate a root canal with pain. And, quite frankly, many are relieved when they’re not the one having to get one.

The truth is, when it comes to root canals, there is nothing to be afraid of. The procedure, actually, is just like getting a filling — and is meant to get you out of pain.

Our Pasadena dental office performs root canals on patients very regularly with very high patient satisfaction. We go the extra mile to put patients at ease before the procedure, and more often than not, we are addressing the following myths about root canals in order to set the record straight.

1. Root Canal Therapy is Going to Hurt

Sure, years ago root canals may have been a painful experience. But not today. Now when a patient has a severe toothache or a cracked and damaged tooth that needs a root canal, I will numb the area and perform a treatment comfortably. After the procedure, you will be well on your way to a pain free mouth again.

2. It’s Better to Extract a Tooth Than Have a Root Canal

False. As a practicing biomimetic dentist, it’s my goal to always preserve as much of the natural tooth as possible. Why extract a healthy tooth when it can be repaired? With a root canal, treatment to neighboring teeth and surrounding tissues is typically not needed. Teeth with root canals can last a lifetime and they have a high success rate.

3. Root Canal Treatment Put You at Risk for Disease

Nearly a century ago, before modern medicine understood what it does now, a poorly designed research made the claim that you’re more likely to become ill in the future after root canal treatment. There is no valid evidence which links a patient being more susceptible to disease after root canal treatment.

How Do You Know If You Need a Root Canal?

If you are having tooth pain, you may be a candidate for a root canal. The only way to know for sure, however, is to give our office a call. We will take a look and set out the best course of treatment to get you out of pain and back to smiling again.
