As a leading cosmetic and laser dentist in the greater Los Angeles area, I take great pride in the dental technologies available at THE SCIENCE OF SMILES. Unfortunately, many of our patients do not know about the all of the fascinating technology that surrounds them at our practice. From lasers to bacteria-killing gas and powerful microscopes — the dental technologies in use at our office will simply blow your mind.
Next time you’re in for a dental exam, be sure to see these 4 dental gadgets in action:
1. Intraoral Cameras
Intraoral cameras are like seeing an iMax movie in 3D. The intra-oral camera handpiece is approximately the size and shape of a dental mirror. It has a built-in light source, so it gives us easy-to-see video and still pictures. We can zoom in on one tooth or give you a video tour of your entire mouth.
2. Laser Detection
A laser is a device that uses light energy to perform work. Lasers in dentistry are unique because they can treat targeted tissue while leaving surrounding tissues unaffected.
Our office uses the Laser MD for hard tissue (teeth) and the Diode Laser for soft tissue. The Laser MD is used in a non contact manner creating less heat and vibration than traditional hand-pieces.
The Diode Laser is used as a non surgical treatment for periodontal (gum) disease. After debris and calcified deposits are removed from the affected teeth, the Diode Laser is used to selectively remove diseased or infected tissues lining the pockets around the teeth. At the same time, the laser will kill the bacteria that cause gum disease and promote healing.
3. Ozone Therapy
Up until ozone therapy was introduced to dentistry, the only way to eradicate decay causing bacteria from teeth was by removing the infected tooth structure with drills, air abrasion or lasers. Today, we use ozone therapy — a method that eliminates bacteria with a burst of ozone (an allotrope of oxygen) — to treat tooth decay and early stage periodontal disease as well as treating canker sores, herpetic lesions, abscesses and other forms of oral disease and wounds.
4. Dental Operating Microscope
The dental operating microscope is by far the most important tool in dentistry today. It gives me superior visualization through light and magnification. I use the microscope for all procedures I perform. As an added benefit, our microscopes and exam rooms are equipped with video cameras and monitors so that patients can see what is present in their mouths and even watch procedures if desired. Each step can be explained pointing out the areas of concern, helping patients understand the benefits of treatment and showing them the outcome of the therapy performed.
