Scientists have found that the same bacteria that causes gum disease may also fuel the growth of cancer cells.
Published in the journal Immunity, scientists say the bacteria could hamper the body’s ability to fight off cancer.
When combined with human tissue cells, researchers found the bacteria attached itself to the parts of the immune system responsible for attacking cancer cells, preventing them from doing their job.
Given the bacteria is found in the mouth, everyone – young and old – should make oral health a priority. The number of links between low levels of oral health and killer diseases are growing by the year. Think about it: Brushing your teeth for four minutes a day could be a life-saving practice!
