Survey Finds Kids’ Oral Health Gets a Failing Grade

  • Blog

Parents are usually quick to boast about their kids, but a new Delta Dental survey finds parents are more than willing to speak their minds when it comes to their kids’ oral health.

In a survey of which parents across the country graded their kids’ oral health, only a few parents (21%) give their kids an A for oral health.

And, not surprising, oral health scores got even worse over time as parents relinquish control of their kids’ brushing and flossing routine. For example:

  • 30% of parents score children under 3 with excellent oral health
  • 21% for 3-5 year olds
  • 17% for 6-9 year olds
  • 14% for 10-12 year olds.

Why Such Poor Scores?

The lackluster survey scores beg the question: What are kids doing wrong?

Not brushing enough (50%) was the most popular response from parents, according to the Delta Dental national survey.

Other top responses include not flossing enough (46%), eating too many sweets (37%), and a family history of poor oral health (21%).

Children Prone to Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is one of the most common childhood diseases, with more than half of children ages 5-9 having at least one cavity.

Maintaining an oral hygiene regimen of brushing twice and flossing daily, along with preventive dental checkups, should be part of every child’s routine. Parents can model this behavior to help kids establish healthy oral care habits at an early age.

How to Keep Kids’ Oral Health on Track

One way parents can keep their kids’ dental hygiene on track is to head over to the app store on your mobile device and download a toothbrush time. Delta Dental, in fact, has one that is optimized for iOS and Android devices.

Healthy teeth and gums are vital to a child’s long-term overall health. Parents should practice good dental health habits and serve as a role model!
