Wisdom and general tooth extractions are common. Complications from those extractions are not so common. But when a complication does occur, more often than not dry sockets are to blame.
Getting dry sockets after wisdom teeth extraction is one of the most painful things that could happen after the procedure.
Dry sockets, also referred to as Alveolar Osteitis, are the most frequent complication after a tooth extraction. Not only are they painful, dry sockets can prolong the healing process.
What Causes Dry Sockets?
A dry socket happens when the hole left behind by an extracted tooth becomes infected. Specific causes vary from patient to patient. For example, sometimes a difficult tooth extraction is to blame.
In case you have a previous history of dry sockets, you have an increased risk for future dry sockets.
How to Prevent Dry Sockets
Post-operative care after teeth removal is important. Make certain to follow the instructions by me or an oral surgeon. Simple guidelines — like biting the gauze placed on your extraction site — have an essential role in the healing procedure.
Sucking on a straw, smoking, drinking alcohol or hot liquids, or even vigorous rinsing, can aggravate your symptoms. Be sure to tell us if you’ve had previous dry sockets or teeth removal complications so we can plan accordingly.
